January, a time for resolutions and exchanging good wishes for the year to come.
Why does Janus, the Roman god, have two faces, looking forward and back? What exactly is Twelfth Night or "wassailing?" Before its current political association, January 6 was celebrated as the Epiphany, the visit of the Three Magi.
According to folklore, the first 12 days of January predict the weather for the next twelve months. The Old Farmer's Almanac has been issuing 80% accurate weather forecasts since 1792. It currently predicts a mild, cold winter for the northeast, mild and wet for the south, cold and dry in the Pacific northwest.
A few weeks ago a snowstorm was predicted to begin the first significant snowfall for the past two years. Are two snowflakes ever alike? Come to GAAMC, Monday, January 22, to learn about the weather, the history of January, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, "the Snowflake Man," Wilson Bentley, of Vermont, the opening of Ellis Island, and so much more interesting information through videos and discussion.
