To celebrate Black History Month, we present "I Am Not Your Negro," a 2016 documentary film directed by Raoul Peck, based on James Baldwin's unfinished manuscript, "Remember This House." Narrated by actor Samuel L. Jackson, the film explores the history of racism in the United States through Baldwin's reminiscences of civil rights leaders Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr, as well as his personal observations of American history. It was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 89th Academy Awards.
Following the film, Gordon will facilitate a discussion among GAAMC members and invited guests on the issues brought to light in the film and life in these (too often) racist United States. The discussion will include special guests with experience in fighting for civil rights beyond LGBT equal rights.
Doors open at 6:30 for set-up.
Film begins as close to 7:00 as we can manage.
