National Coming Out Day!

This week, we celebrate National Coming Out Day, in-person on Monday, via Zoom on Wednesday. Here are some questions to ponder to help keep the conversation flowing.

  • What does “Coming out” mean to you?
  • Feel free to share your coming out story.
  • How is coming out & being LGBTQ+ different today than it was when you were in your 20’s & 30’s?
  • What is it like to witness today’s LGBTQ+ historic events?
  • If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would you say?

If you wish to join Wednesday's Zoom, please RSVP to [email protected] by Tuesday night, and we will be sure to send you the necessary link.

National Coming Out Day (NCOD) is an annual LGBT awareness day observed on October 11, to support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (a.k.a. the LGBT community, sometimes also called the queer community) in "coming out of the closet".[1] First celebrated in the United States in 1988, the initial idea was grounded in the feminist and gay liberation spirit of the personal being political, and the emphasis on the most basic form of activism being coming out to family, friends and colleagues, and living life as an openly lesbian or gay person.[2] The foundational belief is that homophobia thrives in an atmosphere of silence and ignorance, and that once people know that they have loved ones who are lesbian or gay, they are far less likely to maintain homophobic or oppressive views.[3]
