Where the Rubber Meets the Road: The Spirituality of Movement-Building and LGBT Identity

Come join Rev. Robin Tanner for a presentation on her personal story from hiding in the closet to public advocacy and how it changed her soul.

Robin Tanner is the Minister of Worship and Outreach at Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Summit, NJ.  Rev. Tanner has an M.Div. from Harvard Divinity School and is pursuing a Doctorate in Ministry at the Pacific School of Religion. She organizes with Repairers of the Breach and co-convenes the NJ Prophetic Agenda.

Rev. Tanner worked to overturn HB2, the North Carolina law that was passed in March 2016 to ban individuals from using a public bathroom that does not match the person's biological sex. The law also prevented cities from passing rules to protect gay and transgender people from discrimination. In spite of the efforts of Rev. Tanner and thousands of others, HB2 remains in effect. She is an advocate for equal opportunity, voting rights for Latino and African-Americans, raising the minimum wage, marriage equality, as well as other issues. In July 2017, she was arrested while protesting outside the office of Senator Mitch McConnell, as part of an effort of "moral obedience" or civil disobedience, to espouse the cause of health care being a fundamental human right. Tanner protested the GOP healthcare plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act by bringing a coffin to the offices of congressional leaders.

"My faith is clear—health care is a fundamental right...Eroding and eradicating Medicaid is denying life to 22 million Americans. It may be done in the back room bargains of congressional offices instead of under the bright lights of an emergency room, but anyone who supports this—who supports the idea that care of the body is a privilege—has blood on their hands."
